Folds in the southwestern Newark basin

Folds in the southwestern Newark basin. Synclines are shown in gray; anticlines in blue. Anticlines tend to be associated with relay ramps (RR), where segments of the border-fault system are offset from one another. The circled numbers show the thickness in meters of a marker unit (particularly distinctive sedimentary bed or group of beds) at three locations in the Jacksonwald syncline, with the greatest thickness occurring in the trough of the syncline. This indicates that at least some of the folding took place during the deposition of the marker unit. The seismic line (highlighted on map) shows that the Lockatong Formation thickens away from the crest of the Sassamansville anticline. This indicates that at least some of the folding took place during the deposition of the Lockatong Formation. Modified from Schlische (1992) and Reynolds (1994).
