Structural geology of the Newark basin. This map shows the distribution of prerift, synrift, and postrift rocks. Faults affecting only prerift rocks are green. Faults within and bounding the basin are black. The map also shows the location of diabase dikes (thin igneous intrusions that cut across layering). Strike and dip symbols show the attitude of sedimentary layers within the basin. The short tick mark on the symbols indicate the direction in which bedding dips (i.e., the direction it is inclined). Most beds in the basin are inclined to the northwest. Modified from Schlische (1992).
