Geologic map of northern New Jersey. The Ramapo fault (heavy dark line) separates the Newark rift basin from the Highlands and Valley & Ridge physiographic provinces. Other major faults in the Newark basin are the Flemington and Hopewell faults. The Newark basin is overlapped by Cretaceous and younger rocks of the Coastal Plain. On this map, dark green represents Triassic sedimentary rocks in the Newark basin; bright green, Jurassic sedimentary rocks; red, Jurassic lava flows; and, maroon, Jurassic intrusive igneous rocks.
