James Van Buren Browning (Jim) came to Rutgers after earning his master’s with Dave Bottjer at USC to work in paleontology with George McGhee. Along the way, he developed an interest in benthic foraminifera and sequence stratigraphy and completed a PhD working with me in 1996. That same year, he published a paper in Geology, “The Icehouse Cometh,” proposing the presence of significant ice sheets in the middle to late Eocene. At the time, a controversial idea, it has since been validated and remains widely cited as a major advance in our understanding of Cenozoic climate evolution.
For more than three decades, Jim has been at the core of our department’s intellectual life, contributing in ways that extend far beyond conventional measures of academic success. A distinguished stratigrapher and micropaleontologist, he has played a central role in advancing understanding of Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic sea-level change, sequence stratigraphy, and paleoceanography. His work, especially through the New Jersey Coastal Plain drilling project and the IODP, helped establish foundational datasets and concepts that continue to guide research in global climate history.
Jim’s scientific accomplishments are both substantial and enduring. He has authored or co-authored more than 280 publications, including approximately 25 as senior author, with papers appearing in leading journals such as Science, Science Advances, Geology, Reviews of Geophysics, and the Journal of Foraminiferal Research. His work has been widely cited (12,700 citation h-index 45) and has significantly influenced how we interpret sea-level change, stratigraphic architecture, and the coupling between continental margin records and deep-sea processes. His scholarship is defined by rigor, clarity, and an exceptional ability to synthesize complex geological and geochemical data into coherent
scientific insight.
Within Rutgers, Jim’s impact has been equally profound. He served with great dedication as Curator of the Rutgers–IODP Core Repository, acting as steward of one of our most important scientific resources. His knowledge of the cores, meticulous attention to detail, and willingness to assist others made the repository an active and productive center for research, attracting colleagues and collaborators from around the world.
Equally noteworthy is Jim’s long-standing commitment to teaching. Although not required, he insisted on teaching at least one course every semester and served on innumerable MS and PhD committees, reflecting a deep dedication to students and to the broader mission of the university. Whether teaching micropaleontology, historical geology, or introductory courses, Jim brought enthusiasm, clarity, and the perspective of an active researcher into the classroom. Students consistently valued his accessibility, patience, and ability to connect fundamental principles to real-world scientific problems.
For those of us who have worked closely with him, Jim’s greatest contributions may be less easily quantified. Over 30 years, he has been a steady and indispensable presence in field programs, drilling operations, laboratory analysis, and interpretation. He combines deep scientific insight with practicality, reliability, and sound judgment, making him a trusted collaborator in every sense. Behind the science, he performed much service to the department. On a personal level, he has truly been my “right-hand man” throughout this time, a colleague whose loyalty, integrity, and good humor have made even the most challenging projects both successful and enjoyable.
Jim’s career reflects excellence in research, sustained service, and genuine collegiality. His impact will endure through his science, his students, and the many people fortunate enough to have worked with him.
