Dr. Ben Black, Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences,
was named as a member of the 2023-2025 Class of Sloan Fellows.
The Sloan Fellowship program is a highly competitive and selects each class of fellows
based on ”their independent research accomplishments, creativity, and potential to
become leaders in the scientific community through their contributions to their field.”
Ben was joined by two other Sloan Fellows from Rutgers, Dr. Bhargav Narayanan in
Mathematics and Dr. Sepehr Assadi in Computer Science. From the Sloan Foundation:
“These two-year fellowships are awarded yearly to early career researchers in
recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial
contributions to their field.” The fellowship program selects early career faculty at US
and Canadian Institutions whose research can transform our understanding of problems confronting Earth Systems Science, broadly defined as the processes that maintain a habitable planet by looking at the exchange of gases, liquids, and solids between the biosphere, atmosphere, oceans, and lithosphere. The Sloan Foundation recognized Ben for his groundbreaking work on understanding gas release from the subterranean plumbing systems beneath volcanoes as a hidden driver of Earth’s long-term climate evolution.
