"Secrets from reeds: Phytoliths as tools to recover ancient diets and environments"

Animal remains and human-made materials make up the majority of 'fossils' in the archaeological record, and it is from these sources that we have traditionally made our interpretation of past environments and past human diets. Plants are usually missing from such reconstructions, since large fossilized plant remains are rare. Recent studies of phytoliths and other plant microfossils have provided a method for examining ancient environments, and animal and human diets.
