The diagram
below shows a regional cross section through the major physiographic
provinces of eastern Pennsylvania and NJ. The red line is a large normal
fault, movement on which produced the Newark rift basin. The area labeled
Piedmont on the cross section is mostly covered by Coastal Plain sediments
